Protecting Nusa Penida: an Indonesian island in the face of plastic

Thanks to you 👏

100%kg of plastic collected and 2 kg of plastic recycled locally.

The project
Zero wasteInternational aid
Just 30 minutes from Bali, the paradise island of Nusa Penida is submerged in plastic pollution, with overloaded infrastructures and abandoned waste. Earthwake is working alongside a local association to turn this crisis into an opportunity: to create a recycling center on the island. Our aim is to equip their center with low-tech recycling equipment, enabling them to drastically reduce volumes, limit transport costs and recycle the plastic collected.

5
èmeThe world's biggest contributor to plastic pollution in the oceans, Indonesia plays a major role in this problem.
+500
metric tonsof waste generated each month in Nusa Penida (Indonesia).
80
%of plastic waste collected on Nusa Penida has to be sent to Bali and Java for recycling, due to the lack of a local recycling center.
Solution
Earthwake acts on three fronts: on-site diagnosis, plastic waste collection and technical support. We mobilize local suppliers and finance key equipment to transform each waste into a resource. Our ambition: to make the recycling center fully operational and create a replicable model on other Indonesian islands, to finally end the circle of plastic pollution.
Use of the money
Donations will fund the purchase of robust recycling equipment adapted to the island terrain, essential for creating Nusa Penida's first community waste processing center. They will also support its installation and the technical support needed to collect and process more plastic.
